    How much does surrogacy cost in Canada?

    A typical surrogacy journey ranges between $80,000 – $90,000 CAD, depending on clinic fees, legal costs, surrogate reimbursements, insurance, and other factors


    Additional costs may apply for:

    • Egg or sperm donation
    • Travel and accommodations
    • Bed rest or lost wages
    • Multiple pregnancy
    • NICU or hospital stay (in some cases)

    Is surrogacy legal in Canada?

  • Yes. Surrogacy is legal in Canada; however, it is governed by the Assisted Human Reproduction Act (AHRA). It is illegal to pay a surrogate for carrying a pregnancy, but surrogates may be reimbursed for legitimate, documented expenses related to the pregnancy. Non-compliance can result in significant fines or penalties.


    • What is Trust Management?

    Trust Management helps avoid financial tension during the journey. Ontario Surrogacy sets up and manages a reimbursement account so the surrogate submits expenses directly to us rather than discussing finances with Intended Parents.


    What screening does a surrogate go through?

    Surrogates are pre-screened through Ontario Surrogacy and must pass a psychological evaluation. Additional medical screening is completed through the fertility clinic at the Intended Parents’ expense.


    Do Intended Parents need legal representation?

    Yes. Independent legal counsel is strongly recommended for both parties. Legal services typically include drafting and signing the Surrogacy Agreement and obtaining a Declaration of Parentage after birth.


    How long does the surrogacy process take?

    While every journey is unique, the process generally includes:

    1. Consultation and sign-up

    2. Embryo creation (if needed)

    3. Matching with a surrogate

    4. Screening and legal contracts

    5. Transfer and pregnancy confirmation

    6. Pregnancy and birth

    7. Parentage documentation

    Timelines vary depending on embryo readiness, clinic availability, and match compatibility.


    What if our surrogate requires bed rest?

    If medically ordered, bed rest reimbursements are typically approximately $500 per week, plus lost wages if applicable, on top of the special expense amount.


    Can international Intended Parents pursue surrogacy in Canada?

    Yes, but additional considerations may apply, including hospital billing policies and potential newborn hospital stay costs. It is recommended that Intended Parents contact the delivering hospital in advance.
